Infinera Instant Network amplifies the power of Infinera Instant Bandwidth – the industry’s first software defined capacity (SDC) solution – and is the next step on the path to cognitive networking. Instant Network shrinks the time to engineer and deploy optical capacity from months to minutes, reducing idle capital expenditures (CapEx) by activating SDC as revenue-generating services demand it and helping to reduce business risk by shrinking the time between paying for capacity and activating services. Instant Network enables service providers to accelerate service delivery and lower operational expenditures (OpEx) by automating optical capacity engineering and reducing truck rolls.
Instant Network builds on the success of Infinera Instant Bandwidth, the industry’s first solution for SDC. SDC is made possible by Infinera’s unique multi-channel photonic integrated circuits (PICs), which enable cost-effective pre-deployment of capacity. Infinera introduced Instant Bandwidth in 2012, enabling for the first time software activation of service-ready optical capacity in a few hours on networks powered by the DTN-X platform equipped with Infinera’s 500 gigabits per second (500G) PICs. Infinera introduced Time-based Instant Bandwidth in 2015, enabling software activation of bandwidth licenses for a limited duration. With Instant Network, Infinera delivers the next generation of SDC.
Michael Howard, Senior Research Analyst and Advisor, Carrier Networks, IHS Markit, said, “Many vendors are trialing new software licensing models in the router/switch world, and my observation is that they have seen only limited success. In the optical transport world, Infinera seems to be the one vendor that has been quite successful in implementing software-based licensing and delivering on-demand, software-defined capacity, with a large number of their customers actively deploying it today.”
Instant Network Benefits to Network Operators
For transport network operators, Infinera Instant Network reduces CapEx and eliminates business risk associated with provisioning new capacity for emerging applications such as 5G mobile services, the Internet of Things, streaming video, Carrier Ethernet and cloud-based on-demand business services.
It reduces overprovisioning of capacity and idle CapEx by activating new capacity in minutes via software licenses as revenue-generating services demand it. Operators are invoiced only after capacity is deployed, helping to reduce business risk.
Andrew Schmitt, Founder at Cignal AI, said, “Capacity engineering is now a major challenge for network operators as demands for more agile connectivity increase. Infinera’s Instant Network evolves its existing solutions to automate capacity engineering in a way that no other architecture can match by combining high-capacity integrated photonics and a unique software approach.”
The ability to deploy, move and retire capacity in the network using software licenses can dramatically reduce truck rolls and human interactions, lowering OpEx and increasing network reliability.
How Does Infinera Instant Network Work?
Instant Network combines Infinera’s leading-edge photonics with open software to automate optical capacity engineering. Platforms using Infinera’s 500G optical engine and up to 2.4 terabits per second (2.4T) Infinite Capacity Engine enable software defined capacity to be active as service demands request it, reducing idle CapEx and helping match the timing of capacity expense to service revenue. Instant Network amplifies the power of Infinera Instant Bandwidth by adding three new capabilities: Bandwidth License Pools, Transferable Licenses and Automated Capacity Engineering (ACE).

Don Frey, Principal Analyst, Ovum, said, “Carriers are looking for ways to reduce the time to recognize revenue for services. Infinera’s first step was Instant Bandwidth. Now Infinera’s Instant Network, Xceed Software Suite and Infinite Capacity Engine create a killer combination to uniquely address carriers’ requirement to quickly address a customer’s bandwidth need.”
Infinera Instant Network builds a critical foundation for cognitive networking, including implementing and advancing the industry’s first software defined capacity offering. Future cognitive networking will leverage advanced analytics, machine learning from streams of network telemetry data, autonomous operation of routine tasks, predictive analysis of network problems before they occur and proactive recommendations for network optimization to further reduce operational expense and improve service reliability.
How Does Infinera Instant Bandwidth Work?
Infinera Instant Bandwidth, the industry’s first SDC solution, enables optical transport network operators to rapidly deploy bandwidth in various increments, including 100G, without having to deploy and install additional line cards in the system. It offers transport operators the ability to rapidly provision additional capacity with a success-based business model. Instant Bandwidth enables service providers to differentiate their services by shortening provisioning times, accelerating service delivery and reducing time to revenue.
Madam Trinh Minh Chau, Chairwoman and CEO of Hanoi Telecom, said, “Infinera’s Instant Bandwidth allows us to differentiate our services through pre-deployed capacity, which can be delivered on-demand via software-defined activation. In addition, Infinera’s platforms have demonstrated the type of reliability and quality we are looking for in our network.”
Innovation Evolved: Time-based Instant Bandwidth
Infinera has now advanced the Instant Bandwidth solution to offer a new on-demand time-based capability. Time-based Instant Bandwidth enables network operators to temporarily activate line-side bandwidth in 25G, 37.5G, 50G or 100G increments depending on application, with deactivation at the end of a customer-specified time period. It helps fine-tune bandwidth characteristics to more closely match traffic patterns, service demands and network disruptions. Time-based Instant Bandwidth offers flexible control of network capacity as well as its duration, thereby facilitating truly dynamic capabilities to build an Intelligent Transport Network.
Comparing Infinera Instant Bandwidth with the Competition
Infinera Instant Bandwidth enables operators to deploy wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) capacity in various increments including 100G the same day as they turn on the customer services. In contrast, competitive solutions use conventional architecture that results in a time “penalty.” This is because they require multiple time-consuming activities for each additional 100G line card that needs to be deployed, such as ordering, shipping, installation and provisioning, taking several weeks to fulfill. A potential alternate approach for a competitive solution would be to over-order WDM line-cards for a chassis, incurring a significant money “penalty.”
