Technologies Driving Change in Latin America’s Networks

Last week in São Paulo, Brazil, thousands gathered for the largest technology event in Latin America, Futurecom. One of the themes for the event this year was Digital Transformation, and there were several announcements, demonstrations, case studies, and products on display showing off how networks are being modernized to keep up with the surging demand for bandwidth and the new performance requirements for 5G and other network services.

Infinera itself showed off several new technologies to help operators unleash their networks to drive new services and more connections.

The first was the industry’s first point-to-multipoint coherent optical subcarrier aggregation technology, called XR optics. Optimized for hub-and-spoke traffic patterns, XR optics breaks the limitations of traditional point-to-point optical transmission solutions. With an industry-driven, open ecosystem of partners, XR optics technology paves the way for disruptive network economics and a paradigm shift in transport architectures.

We also had many discussions with network operators about the need for a toolbox approach to mobile transport that includes Ethernet-based Time-Sensitive Networking, cost-effective and resource-saving autotuneable DWDM optics like Infinera’s Auto-Lambda technology, IP/MPLS routing, and software automation to bring transport, radio access network (RAN), and mobile core together for advanced service delivery of ultra-reliable, low-latency services.

It is clear that RAN, mobile core, and mobile transport technologies are maturing, and networking operators in Latin America are ready to put these technologies into commercial deployments as they prepare for the launch of the advanced 5G services we are all anticipating.
