Internet Content or Service Providers
Content providers and ISPs are growing incredibly quickly. In effect they form opposite ends of the modern Internet transaction. Users within the broadband network demand content which is served from the content provider. One of the largest of these content providers recently went on record and reported Internet backbone traffic growth levels of around 100% in six months. Data centers now have hundreds of gigabits per second of optical capacity provisioned between them.
To keep up with their rapid growth between data centers, many Internet Content Providers and ISPs are investigating, or actively building private optical networks, typically rings or meshes using leased fiber in a metro area. Such companies need the ability to deploy and scale quickly and easily, and an "IP-familiar" management model.
The Infinera Solution
With staggering growth rates characterizing the Content Provider and ISP market, these companies can benefit from an Infinera Digital Optical Network solution in a number of ways:
- For these carriers, the ability to roll out huge amounts of capacity is paramount. Infinera offers the highest density and most scalable optical networking solution available today. With 800Gb/s of totally flexible add/drop capacity per rack, no other vendor can come close. And Infinera line cards add capacity in 100Gb/s increments, at a fraction of the cost of equivalent discrete optical equipment.
- For many content providers, even 100 Gigabit Ethernet will be "too little too late" Infinera's lead in demonstrating 100GE capability in 2006 is a clear proof point that our Digital ROADM technology is already able to handle 100GE services. Coupled with Infinera's Digital Bandwidth Management it means that a content provider or ISP need never worry about the ability of the infrastructure to support high speed services today, or in the future.
- Content providers and ISPs have a wealth of IP (and TV) experience, but given their lean operational models, prefer not to invest staff time and dollars managing the optical intricacies of conventional DWDM. Infinera's Digital ROADM technology uses operational procedures that are very similar to those used in the IP world for the provisioning and protection of services. Existing IP-based skill sets are more than adequate to operate an Infinera network.
- Using Infinera's Embedded Software Intelligence, operators can turn up services quickly and easily. GMPLS-driven "point and click" provisioning has the simplicity of Ethernet with the scalability of DWDM.
