Independent Carriers

Independent carriers who survived the telecom downturn are now experiencing a period of rapid growth. In fact these organizations are succeeding because they are willing to make use of leading edge technologies to reduce costs, and reduce the time it takes to deliver service to their customers.

The Infinera Solution

Independent carriers benefit from an Infinera solution in a number of ways:

• For these carriers, the ability to roll out huge amounts of capacity is paramount. Infinera offers the highest density and most scalable optical networking solution available today. With 800Gb/s of totally flexible add/drop capacity per rack, no other vendor can come close. And Infinera line cards add capacity in 100Gb/s increments, at a fraction of the cost of equivalent discrete optical equipment.

• Independent carriers are typically offering pure bandwidth services, which are effectively commodity services when delivered using conventional DWDM. Infinera customers are using the unique capabilities of the Infinera DTN to differentiate on speed and service quality. Since spare capacity is very easy and cost effective to maintain in the Digital Optical Network, it also becomes simple to add tributary access capacity upon demand by the customer. Infinera has even removed this problem from our customers' shoulders by pioneering our Just in TAM™ solution. This removes the need for carriers to maintain expensive stockpiles of equipment, and yet they retain the ability to deliver new services quickly and easily.

• Independent carriers have stayed in business by practicing careful expense management. The Digital Optical Network can be installed and operated using a fraction of the staff needed for an equivalent conventional network. And an Infinera network requires only a fraction of the Field Replaceable Units (ie. "spare parts" compared to a conventional optical network built from discrete components.

• Independent operators have to offer reliable services because they're strictly bound by SLAs. Infinera's Digital Optical Network has access to full SDH-like Performance Management and OAM capabilities. These are used to provide true "sub 50ms" optical protection. But Infinera's protection options don't stop there. Using our Embedded Software Intelligence (based on GMPLS) a carrier can exploit shared protection schemes to maximize service availability from a given set of bandwidth resources. Reliability also comes in the form of our unique PIC technology, which eliminates over 95% of fiber couplings in a typical system.
